Performer overview:
Nicolette Kay is a British theatre director, known for bringing hidden theatrical gems to life on stage. Trained at The Drama Centre, London, she began her career as an actor, performing leading roles with companies such as the Cambridge Theatre Company, Derby Playhouse, The Gate, and The Women’s Theatre Group. Notably playing Miss Hoyden in The Relapse alongside David Jason and Ophelia to Edward Fox’s Hamlet at The Young Vic.
Shifting her focus to directing, Nicolette founded Muzikansky Theatre Company, staging productions at prominent Off-West End venues. She directed and toured the world premiere of Seed by Souad Faress, a piece inspired by a plaque in the foyer of Trinity Theatre, Tunbridge Wells.
Muzikansky later evolved into New Shoes Theatre, dedicated to impactful storytelling. The company premiered the UK production of Dacia Maraini’s Hurried Steps at the Finborough Theatre, a powerful play highlighting violence against women and girls. This production toured extensively across the UK, including Tunbridge Wells, and even reached audiences in Sydney, Australia.
Living in Tunbridge Wells, Nicolette has worked closely with Kent Youth & Community, creating internationally screened films with young people in the Sherwood and Showfields areas of the town. She has also cultivated a strong bond with The Forum Tunbridge Wells, where she’s produced plays, hosted short film nights, and organised a one-off film festival.
Nicolette is also a dramaturg, published writer and translator, and she has previously shared her insights through a CoventGardenWomenTEDx talk. She draws inspiration from fellow TEDx speakers Leyla Hussain and Laura Bates, whose work continues to fuel her passion for socially conscious storytelling.
Nicolette’s work reflects her belief in the power of theatre as a tool for change, community, and connection.
