ABOUT CHEDDAR GORGEOUS:
Cheddar Gorgeous is a drag artist, academic and unicorn who doesn't live in London. From founding a Manchester club night, to performing in venues ranging from bars to galleries and museums, cheddar believes that life is too short to only be one person. Before making a spectacle of theirself for a living, Cheddar liked to draw and write about other people, in Anthropology.
We can’t wait to welcome you to the TEDxRoyalTunbridgeWells stage, Cheddar! In the meantime, can you tell us a little more about your idea worth spreading?
Rather than playful attempts to escape who we are, Drag and other forms of dressing up ways of exploring our identities, connecting with others and embodying our stories. Although fun, these moments of play in the spotlight can be powerful tools of personal transformation, community building and political change.
What was the main motivation for giving a TEDx talk?
I see TED as a democratic platform for people who have something to say. I love the diversity of speakers and that the discussion is not dominated by a single discipline or ethos. Speakers are elevated as a collective of valued storytellers rather than experts.
What is the one thing you want the audience to take away from your TEDx talk?
I want to the audience to see dressing as more than just fun, frivolity and escapism.
What are some of your favourite TED or TEDx talks?
Simon Sinek’s Start with Why and Elizabeth Gilbert’s talk, Your elusive creative genius.
Cheddar Gorgeous, we're so excited to be welcoming you to Tunbridge Wells! Is there anything other than giving a TEDx talk that you're looking forward to doing or seeing while you’re here?
Well I do love tea and cake.
